I was able to get my hands on the new American Spirit SFX surf combo this spring and have to say I was thoroughly impressed with this economic setup that will put any caster right in the surf game for a good value.
The rods gained some popularity for their low price tag but quality builds. They feature top tier guides, a channel lock reel seat, X-flock shrink wrap on the rear grip with additional EVA pieces for grip and comfort. The rod also has a decorative diamond wrapping above the foregrip. The very end of the rod has a mushroom style cap that will prevent your hand from slipping off during the hardest of casts. The blanks themselves are a quick taper and allow for minimal effort with longer casts.
The longcast reel paired on the rod has 13 ball bearings for smoothness, an instant anti-reverse system, a CNC spool and handle, carbon washers and metal gears. I noticed they also have an excellent line oscillation system that pairs well with the longcast reel system. The handle design itself is offset for more cranking power and it’s interchangeable between left and right-hand retrieve.
The 10-foot SFX1002S model I’ve been using casts surprisingly well for a value combo rod. I was able to launch 1-1/2 ounce swim shads and 2-ounce poppers like a rocket ship into a harbor channel. The action on the rod performed well, too. The rod didn’t feel like your typical “meat stick” for bait fishing and I’ve had no problem using it to work a cast a plug for hours at a time fatigue-wise. 
The surf combo series is available in seven different models from 9 to 12 feet with one conventional casting model in the mix. The conventional along with another 10-foot also feature cork grips in place of where the eva would be on the setup that I’ve been using. If you’re looking for performance but for a value take a look at these new combos to put you right in the surf game.
