Mike at Fishing East Coast Bait and Tackle in Little Neck reports nighttime has been best for stripers with the fish hitting plugs or sucking down live eels. Fluke are populated along the entire stretch of the North Shore but unless you go way to the east, most of the fluke are shorts. The usual formula of Gulp, bucktails, squid and spearing are nailing the flatties. If you are to use natural bait, be sure to have plenty on hand or use strips of sea robin or legal fluke bellies as you are going to need them. Porgies are now on the small side with a lot of under size scup around. Keep at it and you’ll be able to put a catch together for dinner. Worms and clams are best. Blue claw crabbing from the south shore docks, piers and pilings is off to a great start using bunker and traps.
