Marina Pez Vela, Quepos – Costa Rica

A stunning 44” Costa Rican Roosterfish for Tom Dieck from New York, caught aboard GOOD DAY, Marina Pez Vela, Costa Rica

It has been an incredible start to the year here at the Marina Pez Vela in Quepos, Costa Rica.  The blue marlin fishing in recent weeks has been nothing short of phenomenal!  During the Pelagic Rockstar tournament in mid January there were 271 marlin released during the two-day tournament out of the Marina Pez Vela, we believe no other tournament on the planet has ever released such numbers of blue marlin in a weekend, just wow!  Opportunities for striped marlin and black marlin exist also; the 31-foot Good Day released an estimated 500-pound black marlin on 30-pound stand-up tackle during January, a true fish of a lifetime!

59” of ole Blue Lip, what an example of a beautiful Costa Rican dorado for Tom Dieck from New York, aboard Good Day out of Marina Pez Vela, Costa Rica

The rains carried on a little later than usual this year and helped keep water temperatures to around 80 to 82 degrees throughout January, just perfect for marlin.   The rains have now subsided and water temps should increase to around 85-86 in the coming weeks which will cause the marlin numbers to reduce and make way for the best sailfish fishing of the year between February & April, where double-digit sailfish days are common.

Another Gray Fishtag Research tagging expedition at the Marina Pez Vela, aboard Good Day, this time teaching a group of Costa Rican youths the importance of tagging, research, conservation & the wider impact of the sport fishing industry on the Costa Rican economy & the opportunities it presents for employment.

Catches of mahi, yellowfin tuna and a few trophy wahoo have been strong during offshore trolling trips whilst snappers, amberjack, pompano and more have been biting good whilst bottom fishing or jigging the offshore reefs.

A 41” & 30lb Pacífic black snook for Christian Juan Page who was visiting Costa Rica from Spain & caught this catch of a lifetime out of the Marina Pez Vela aboard Good Day.

Inshore the annual threadfin herring arrival is in full effect with plenty of bait available along the beaches close to Quepos.   Roosterfish and snook fishing has been excellent with some huge examples of both species caught this week by our charter boats, with snook to more than 30 pounds and roosterfish to more than 60 pounds caught.

We hope to see you soon in sunny Costa Rica, Tight Lines!
